Spelman College is Empowering the Next Generation of Tech Architects
In the heart of the new Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation and the Arts, Spelman College is creating a revolution in how the liberal arts are taught, practiced and applied. While many institutions treat technology as a siloed technical skill, the Arthur M. Blank Spelman Innovation Lab reflects a more profound conviction. It serves as an engine for a new technology blueprint, where a liberal arts education provides the essential framework for leadership in an AI-driven global economy.
The Lab also represents a strategic shift toward a modernized curriculum that prepares Black women not just to participate in the digital economy, but to define it.
A Strategic Intersection of Art and Algorithm
The Lab’s physical and administrative placement within the Division of the Arts is a deliberate choice that challenges the traditional hierarchy of higher education. This "arts-first" approach to technology enables students to engage with complex systems with the critical inquiry and creative freedom typical of the humanities.
"This strategic placement reflects our core conviction: technology is not a siloed discipline, but a versatile medium for all fields of study," said Jaycee Holmes, C'2016, director of the Innovation Lab and professor of interactive media in the Department of Art and Visual Culture. "We challenge traditional education by using a project-based, 'learn-by-doing' approach. We teach computational thinking and AI literacy not merely as theoretical concepts, but as creative tools.”
By viewing technology as an extension of the creative process, the Lab empowers students—from philosophy and history to biology and sociology—to transition from passive consumers of digital products to active architects of them. This methodology is deeply rooted in a commitment to equity, creating a "maker" culture where students from historically excluded backgrounds can safely experiment, fail and ultimately gain the confidence to lead high-stakes technical projects.
From Consumer to Architect: The Power of "Exploratory Play"
The shift toward a modernized curriculum is most evident in the high-level projects emerging from the Lab, such as PlantGPT, an AI-powered, sensor-driven plant care, and MontAIge, an AI-driven sewing pattern generator. These projects illustrate a philosophy where critical thinking meets tangible application through what the Lab calls "exploratory play."
"We aren’t just teaching students to understand the world, we are giving them the tools to build it," Holmes said. "MontAIge, designed by student Mariama Barry, C’2028, is a perfect example. She is a computer science major with a minor in interactive media, but her success really comes from her deep passion for fashion design. She didn’t just use technology; she combined her knowledge of garment construction with her technical skills to architect something entirely new. That is the essence of our mission: merging a student's personal interests with high-level technical proficiency."
This same philosophy extends to the Lab’s Game Development program. In an era where gaming is a multi-billion-dollar industry, Spelman is ensuring its students are at the helm of the creation process rather than just the consoles.
“We are training developers. Students come to the lab to engage with the medium, but they stay to design and build their own games," Holmes said. "By surrounding our students with an academic and co-curricular ecosystem of fellowships, student-led research groups and faculty-led initiatives, we ensure they have the support to tackle any challenge.”
The Philanthropic Catalyst: Scaling the Human Ecosystem
If the Lab’s curriculum is the software, philanthropic support has been the vital hardware and power source for its evolution. The transition into the Center for Innovation and the Arts, made possible by generous donors like the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, provided the infrastructure necessary to scale Spelman’s technological footprint to meet global shifts in AI and entrepreneurship.
"This infrastructure does more than provide space; it provides the capacity to scale," Holmes said. "We now host more than 700 unique student visitors annually, excluding those in formal Innovation Lab classes, all of whom are actively prototyping, creating, researching and building businesses."
However, the impact of this support extends far beyond the four walls of the facility or the high-powered workstations within them. It is about the "human ecosystem" that makes the technology meaningful.
"This support does more than provide state-of-the-art facilities; it invests in the human ecosystem that makes that technology meaningful," Holmes said. "Philanthropy allows us to maintain the agility required to keep pace with the rapid shifts in AI and entrepreneurship, ensuring our curriculum remains aligned with current industry standards. Perhaps most importantly, these partnerships facilitate the deep mentorship our students need to bridge the gap between classroom theory and industry leadership."

The Innovation Lab's growth is a prime example of the Spelman Forward campaign. By investing in these modernized academic offerings, the campaign ensures that Spelman continues to produce graduates who are “future-ready” and "industry-relevant" from day 1.
In a global landscape where AI is rewriting the rules of work and creative expression, the Lab serves as a hub for both "exploratory play" and high-stakes research. It is a place where a student can walk in with a question about sustainable fashion or botanical communication and walk out with a functioning AI prototype.
As the College moves forward, the Innovation Lab stands as a testament to the power of philanthropic investment in scaling the future. Through the continued support of community partners and donors, Spelman is not just keeping pace with the world, it is providing the next generation of thought leaders with the tools to redesign it.
