Centralizing AI for Transformation:
Old Dominion University’s Strategy for Success

At Old Dominion University (ODU), artificial intelligence, commonly referred to as AI, is not just a technological advancement—it’s a driving force for transformation across education, research, and operations. ODU’s approach to AI is built on collaboration, centralization, and enhancement of student success by fully integrating AI across the institution.
Unlike many universities where AI efforts are fragmented, ODU has developed a unified strategy to ensure that every AI initiative—whether in education, research, or operations—serves both students and the broader community. This centralization maximizes efficiency, positioning ODU as a leader in AI integration.
“Our future is shaped not by technology alone, but also by how we utilize it to advance learning, research, and societal good,” said President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D. “ODU’s AI strategy enhances what we do today and positions us for tomorrow by leading the way in the future of higher education.”
Unified AI Vision: Collaboration and Leadership
President Hemphill’s vision for ODU emphasizes the need to embrace rapid technological changes in order to serve communities effectively. His inauguration speech set the foundation for ODU’s AI strategy, focusing on collaboration and a centralized approach to drive innovation. As President Hemphill noted, “We must be innovative to thrive. Universities that engage in visionary changes will remain at the forefront.” Some universities, he said, evolve at a speed that isn’t optimal to fully serve their communities. Those that embrace the rapid changes are prepared to lead. Those who understand that the core of innovation is thinking in new and profound ways to improve results—with students at the heart of every decision—will excel. His vision has served as a catalyst for collaboration, focusing on integrating AI into the fabric of the university.
The AI symposium, “Striking the Balance: AI Automation and Human Interaction in Teaching and Learning,” held in fall 2023, brought together students, faculty, and staff, as well as thought leaders. This event was crucial in shaping ODU’s AI strategy and fostering cross-departmental collaboration that positioned AI as a key driver of institutional change.
During the 2023 State of the University address, President Hemphill highlighted the role of AI in advancing ODU’s mission, stating “Old Dominion University has stepped forward with a bold vision and transformational plan for how to advance our institution – now and well into the future” because “At ODU, we are thought leaders; we are talented; we are tenacious; we are tireless; we are trusted; and we are trailblazers.”

AI at the Heart of Research
ODU’s commitment to AI research is led by the Artificial Intelligence Research Working Group, launched in 2024. This interdisciplinary group unites researchers from across the university to tackle critical societal challenges through AI, such as healthcare, maritime operations, and coastal resilience. The working group’s goal is to advance AI innovation, while ensuring ethical considerations remain at the forefront. By fostering partnerships with industry and government, the working group drives impactful solutions that extend beyond academia.
The AI Research Working Group is central to ODU’s leadership in AI-driven innovation, creating a collaborative environment that accelerates the application of AI technologies for societal good.
Advancing AI in Education through Strategic Initiatives
ODU’s AI strategy extends into both research and teaching, led by two key initiatives under the Provost, Brian Payne., PhD. The Centennial Cluster Initiative aims to strengthen ODU’s research capacity through the hiring of 25 faculty members across disciplines. These hires will advance AI-driven research in areas like healthcare, autonomous systems, and ethical AI governance. This initiative aligns with ODU’s strategic plan, "Forward-Focused: Where Innovation Meets Possibilities," and enhances the university’s interdisciplinary collaboration and research impact.
At the same time, the AI Teaching Fellows program ensures that AI is integrated into the curriculum across a broad range of fields, from business to humanities. Students gain practical experience with AI technologies, while engaging in critical discussions about AI’s societal implications. By embedding AI into teaching, ODU is preparing its students to become leaders in the AI-powered future.
ODU’s comprehensive AI strategy also includes the launch of AI microcredentials, offering students and professionals the opportunity to gain essential skills in AI technologies. These flexible learning pathways ensure that graduates are well-prepared for the evolving demands of the AI-powered workforce.
Together, these initiatives are at the heart of ODU’s strategy to transform education and prepare students and faculty for the challenges and opportunities AI presents.
Implementing AI for Institutional Transformation
The Division of Digital Transformation and Technology (DTT), led by Vice President Nina Rodriguez Gonser, is responsible for executing ODU’s AI initiatives at scale. The division ensures that AI is applied efficiently across the university, enhancing both education and operations. Key projects include the AI-Powered Personalized Learning Assistant, offering round-the-clock access to personalized course materials, and ODU AssistNOW, an AI-driven platform for administrative support. These projects reflect ODU’s commitment to using AI to improve student experiences and operational efficiency.
“AI is not just about adopting the latest technologies—it’s about leveraging these tools to reshape the student experience and make our operations more efficient,” said Nina Rodriguez Gonser. “At ODU, we are using AI to build a more dynamic, responsive university that anticipates and meets the needs of our students, faculty, staff, and the community we serve.”
Chrysoula Malogianni, Ph.D., associate vice president for digital innovation, serves as the “glue” that ties these initiatives together, ensuring they are successfully integrated into the university’s operational framework.
“My role is to ensure these efforts come together seamlessly,” Dr. Malogianni said. “By aligning our initiatives, we maximize the impact of AI across the university and beyond.”

Looking Forward: Shaping the Future with AI
A centralized AI strategy places ODU at the forefront of higher education’s digital transformation. With a clear focus on education, research, and operational excellence, ODU is redefining how universities can harness the power of AI to drive innovation, improve student success, and create meaningful societal change.
By making AI central to its vision, Old Dominion University is not just keeping pace with technological advancements—it’s leading the way.
